Cody Appleton
As a candidate for STA executive, I bring 14 years of diverse teaching experiences, having taught in various school settings, including community schools as well as large and small schools throughout the city. My teaching experiences have given me valuable insights into the different challenges and opportunities of Saskatoon schools. My teaching career includes being a classroom teacher, prep release teacher, band teacher as well as a vice principal.
I have a personal connection to education as well, as my children are enrolled in French immersion and my amazing wife is a secondary teacher in Saskatoon. This provides me a perspective with firsthand insights into the educational landscape and challenges faced by educators.
I hold a Master of Education degree and actively participate in advocacy and leadership roles within the education sector, including serving as a non-executive STF councillor (one year), as well as SSR and SSL (3 years). Additionally, I have been involved in setup and volunteering at strike days, advocating for educators at a local and provincial level. Although I am not currently a member of the executive, I think this allows me to offer a fresh perspective, bringing new ideas and insights to the table.
I am dedicated to advocating for teachers’ rights and promoting transparency, better management and accountability within the STA. With my experience, leadership skills and dedication to collective action, I aim to be a strong voice for teachers and students, fostering positive change and supporting the needs of the education community.

Melanie Bevan
Good day colleagues –
My name is Melanie Bevan, and I have enjoyed being an STA councilor for the previous nine years.Today, I humbly seek your support to continue serving as a councilor for the 2024-2025 term year.
I have served as both an executive and non-executive councilor – roles which helped me to advocate for Saskatoon teachers through different lenses. I am passionate about the unique perspective that comes with teaching in our beautiful and complex city and am eager to return and continue this work.
In my 17 years of teaching math and science, I have taught at many different high schools that brought their own rewards and challenges. This experience combined with my strong belief in the incredible value to society that public education can provide led me to co-chair the Public Relations committee for several years and spearhead various campaigns including the Teacher Project. I am now a member-at- large of the PR committee, and I would love to continue gaining inspiration from the different advocacy ideas I hear at council from around the province.
At council my priority is to ensure that the voices of Saskatoon teachers are heard. I truly hope to continue this work that I am so passionate about. Thank you for your consideration!
Jasper Bintner
I began my career in Edmonton as a science teacher before returning to teach in Saskatoon at Montgomery School, Bedford Road Collegiate, and most recently at Evan Hardy Collegiate. Prior to teaching, I spent a decade in biomedical research, but my experience teaching English abroad shifted my focus towards education. This led me to channel my passion for science into the classroom. In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I am actively involved in the Saskatoon Teachers' Association, contributing to the STA and STF as an SSR (and SSL in the recent past) as well as turns on the Executive Expense, PD, and Election (when we still did in person vote tallying) Committees. I have also regularly served as a non-Executive Member at STF Council. I am committed to improving education and maintaining a transparent and collaborative educational community.
Courtney Blatz
Hello STA Representatives! My name is Courtney Blatz, and I have been fortunate to have been elected as a non-executive councilor for the past 4 years. In that time, I have strived to bring a voice to provincial council for the many teachers like me on temporary contracts.
For the past 11 years, I've worked as a high school teacher with Saskatoon Public Schools, presently at Estey: Home of the Flex Program. Throughout this time, I've been dedicated to enhancing my pedagogical skills and knowledge base. I've gained extensive experience teaching a diverse array of subjects. My academic journey includes a major in Indigenous Studies at the University of Saskatchewan, accreditation in chemistry, and a recently completed Post-Degree Certificate in English as an Additional Language.
I firmly believe that my passion for serving as a councilor would allow me to contribute significantly to the advancement of our collective goals. With a deep-rooted personal commitment to ensuring equitable and quality education for all students in this province, I bring to the table years of teaching experience and a unique perspective.
At council, I work each day to ensure that the voices of Saskatoon teachers are represented in each session and for every resolution. I hope to continue this work and respectfully ask that you vote for me for 2024-25!

I have taught high school science in the Saskatoon Public system since 2005, including teaching in the IB programme. I also have other experience working with at-risk youth and young adults. I thank you for considering supporting me to be a non-Executive Councillor. I have been an SSR and SSL for approximately 13 years, and have been attending Council as a non-Exec Councillor for 7 years. I find Council to be a great way to learn what teachers around the province think and are dealing with - sometimes it is very similar to what I am dealing with here in Saskatoon, sometimes it is different. I take my role as a councillor very seriously and try to understand the issues and to speak for what I feel to be best for teachers across the province. I ask questions so that I receive information instead of assuming, and I listen to what people say. I know that teachers' strength comes from our numbers and from working together for common goals, even when we have diverse voices. I look forward to bringing my experience, attentiveness, and thoughtfulness to this role in service to our members. Thank you/chi miigwech.

Michelle Gulka
Bonjour and hello folx, my name is Michelle Gulka and I am running to be a STA executive member.
I'm currently in my ninth year of teaching and throughout those years, I've been in many different roles. While I currently teach in secondary, I also taught in elementary school, mainly middle years. Not only do I have experience with various age groups, I am also currently teaching half time French Immersion and English Language Arts. During my nine years, I have also mentored new teachers, worked with inters, co-taught, been department head, and supported experienced colleagues. I feel that my knowledge and understanding of both elementary and secondary schools will be a great asset for the executive.
I began attending STA meetings in 2021 with a not so subtle push my a colleague to join. He saw my passion for supporting teachers, my ability to work well in collaborative environments, and believed my perspective was both unique and valuable for the organization. Since then, I've really enjoyed learning more about our association and as I've gathered more confidence, I feel ready to take a more active role. This is evident in my involvement this year, especially with sanctions and that I'm committee chair for the newly developed SSR Mentorship Committee.
Thank you,
Michelle Gulka (She/Her/Elle)

I'm an EAL teacher in GSCS and have been for about 19 years. I am interested in policy and resolutions, having created the SK TEAL Professional Growth Network (PGN) and having worked on policies for the PGN. As well, I've worked on resolutions that SK TEAL has sent to council. Having served off and on as SSR for schools I teach at, this would be another way to give back to the STA and our teaching area.
Kelsey Kiefer
Kelsey has been involved with the Saskatoon Teachers' Association in several ways since 2017. This has included time as a School Staff Representative, as well as being on the STA Executive for the past five years.

I have been an educator in Saskatoon since 2006, having taught across various elementary classroom grades. For the past eight years, I have worked as a French Immersion Learning Assistance Teacher, presently holding this role at Saskatoon French School.
I take pride in representing my school on the STA, a responsibility I have undertaken on and off over the last 15 years. The past couple years I’ve been diving deeper into our association - attending the rally in Regina, volunteering at our Saskatoon mini rally, and working as a site deputy during every strike day. I have also recently joined a new STA committee - the Executive Allowance Committee. Additionally, I have previously served on a committee with the STF.
However, It's time for the next step! I hope to be elected as an Executive Member of the STA, so I can help to lead the STA towards its “Big, open, and transparent” future.

I've been a councilor for the past 8 years both as a non-exec and as an STA executive. I've taught on reserve and within the city of Saskatoon since 2006. I believe continuing on in this capacity as a non executive councilor, is something that shows my commitment to the members I serve. I am a First Nation woman from the Beardy's and Okemasis First Nation and this past year has seen a huge change with the loss of my husband due to mental health. He was also a teacher, a substitute for over 10 years. I feel the need to be available for my teenage sons more than ever and non-exec councilor is a time commitment I'm willing to make. This would allow me to be present for my kids this next school year.

As a substitute teacher with extensive experience across various school divisions and teaching capacities, I am running for the STA Executive. I have actively participated in STA meetings for several years, and I am currently serving as the Chair of the Substitute Teacher Committee and the Substitute Teacher Representative. My vision is clear: I want to ensure that substitute teachers are better represented within our union and the province, as a whole. I understand the unique challenges we face, from job insecurity to lack of benefits. By collaborating with contracted educators, I believe we can create a stronger, more inclusive union, which recognizes and addresses these unique issues. My commitment is to advocate for job stability, health benefits, sick days, and fair compensation for all substitute teachers. I hope that you, the members of the Representative Assembly, recognize my experience and desire for continuing the work to ensure substitute teachers have a seat at the table. Thank you for your support, and I look forward to serving all teachers within Saskatoon.
Jenna Totland
My name is Jenna Totland and I have been a teacher for thirteen years. My first experience attending STF council was as a substitute councillor. I have learned so much about how this process works, and I would appreciate the opportunity to continue to be a part of it for the upcoming year.
